Yankton police conducts vape store compliance check

YANKTON, S.D. (KELO) – Four local vape shops in Yankton were a part of a police compliance check on Thursday. Officers select volunteers based on their age to go into a business and attempt to make a purchase.

"Once we have the person selected, we provide the money to purchase the product. We send them into the store to purchase. For instance, yesterday's issue was tobacco. So, we requested that they purchase a tobacco product and it's up to the store to either ask for identification or verify that identification," Sergeant Sarah O'Farrell with Yankton Police said.

Vape God, Flamez Tobacco and Vapor and Chasing Clouds Vape and Smoke all passed. The fourth store, Smoke Break, did not.

"That particular business did sell a tobacco product to an underage individual. In South Dakota, you have to be 21 to purchase tobacco products. They did not request to see, nor did they verify his age," O'Farrell said.

Police later returned to the store and gave the employee a ticket. O'Farrell said police will be conducting more alcohol and tobacco compliance checks in the future.
