2 injured, 5 displaced after fire rips through senior living apartment complex on south side

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Neighbors on the south side could not sleep in this Sunday morning. Alarms, sirens, smoke, and fire jolted them awake. One 86-year-old man survived the vicious blaze, even though he almost slept through the chaos.

The Indianapolis Fire Department says firefighters were dispatched at approximately 4:42 a.m. to Rosegate Commons American Senior Community near Emerson Avenue and Interstate 65, after a 911 caller reported fire in an attached garage.

Firefighters say the heavy fire ripped through five apartments, which are now completely destroyed.

The man told investigators he heard “the smoke alarm sound for well over 30 minutes” but dismissed it because he thought it was a neighbors alarm.
