A suspect who allegedly brandished a firearm and threatened to kill his neighbor before barricading himself inside a Spring Valley home was arrested early Tuesday following an hourslong standoff with SWAT, sheriff’s officials said.

The incident began around 5:30 p.m. Monday when deputies received a report of an armed 33-year-old man threatening his neighbor during a dispute on Austin Drive near Highlands Boulevard, Sgt. Gerardo Mateus said.

When deputies arrived, they learned the man allegedly had two active warrants in connection to an unrelated incident, Mateus said. The deputies attempted to get the man to surrender, but he refused and holed up inside the home, investigators said.

SWAT team members and crisis negotiators were then called.

Around 12:30 a.m., the man came out of the home and was taken into custody. Deputies searched the home and found a firearm inside, Mateus said.

Details about the events leading up to the neighborhood dispute or what incident the outstanding warrants were connected to were not immediately available Tuesday.

The man was booked into Central Jail on suspicion of making criminal threats, according to online arrest records.
