Investigators identify driver, officer involved in La Presa pursuit shooting

Investigators on Tuesday identified a driver who was shot and the San Diego police officer who wounded him at the end of a vehicle pursuit in the La Presa neighborhood of Spring Valley last week.

Edwaun Walter Thames, 39, was shot by San Diego police Officer Henry Ingram Jr. after Thames led police on a 10-minute chase that ended when the SUV he was driving collided with a light pole near Jamacha Road and Gillespie Drive, sheriff’s homicide Lt. Juan Marquez said.

Thames was taken to a hospital for serious but not life-threatening injuries, Marquez said. He was later booked on suspicion of evading arrest, possession of a stolen vehicle and vehicle theft.

Ingram has been with the Police Department for two years and has worked in law enforcement for nine years. He is currently assigned to patrol at the Southeastern Division.

The shooting is being investigated by the Sheriff’s Office in accordance with a county memorandum that prevents local agencies from investigating their own officer-involved shootings.

According to investigators, the incident began shortly after officers received a report around 12:40 p.m. of a stolen SUV near Euclid and Imperial avenues in southeastern San Diego.

Within an hour, police spotted the vehicle, and an officer attempted to pull it over on Imperial Avenue, Marquez said. The driver did not comply, and a pursuit began, investigators said.
