NEW WHITELAND, Ind. (WISH) — A teen charged in connection to the rape and strangulation of a 79-year-old woman in October, pleaded guilty to all counts during a hearing on Feb. 2.

Ariahn Smith, who was 16-years-old at the time, has been charged with rape, a mid-level felony, and strangulation, a low-level felony.

Police say a 79-year-old woman was carrying groceries into her home in New Whiteland, making multiple trips, when she found Smith inside her house.

A probable cause affidavit says Smith grabbed the woman and covered her mouth. The victim initially attempted to stall him and convinced Smith to pray with her, but afterward, he grabbed her by her throat and raped her.

Smith is currently being held in Johnson County Jail and is being charged as an adult.

His sentencing is set for 9 a.m. March 12.
