NWS Crane: Supporting warfighter readiness through advanced research

CRANE, Ind. (WISH) — The world’s third-largest naval installation, formerly known as Naval Support Activity Crane, was officially renamed Naval Weapons Station Crane on Dec. 1, 2025. The installation is located in Crane, Ind., roughly 35 miles south of Bloomington.

The renaming aims to align the installation’s name with its primary missions in weapons systems development and testing. NWS Crane is also responsible for the storage of approximately 25% of the Department of War’s joint conventional munitions.

The station and its surrounding areas have seen growth and investment tied to the Secretary of War’s priorities of strengthening the Defense Industrial Base and achieving technological superiority. Officials noted that these priorities are addressed through the innovative acquisition of munitions and technology.

The name change reflects a shift in focus from administrative support to primary mission areas. Naval support activities typically provide administrative assistance for headquarters and service schools. NWS Crane focuses on weapons systems development and testing, while also housing roughly 25% of the Department of War’s joint conventional munitions.

Cmdr. Luis Martinez serves as the commanding officer for NWS Crane. In this role, he oversees the installation’s work with partner commands, including the Crane Army Ammunition Activity and the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division.
