The Ramona Unified School District board approved an assistant superintendent to serve as acting superintendent at the Tuesday evening board meeting.
Assistant Superintendent of Education Services Leslie Wilson will take over the role while Superintendent Brian Thurman is on leave. No date is set for his return.
Corina McMillen, executive assistant to the superintendent, wrote over email that Thurman is out due to a planned procedure to replace his mitral heart valve, with an expected six to 10 weeks of recovery.
Wilson will make an additional $375 a day while serving in this role. Board members acknowledged the work required to take on additional responsibilities while still serving as an assistant superintendent.
“I would encourage all board members to remember that she’s working long hours, wearing multiple hats,” said Daryn Drum, board president.
Wilson, in the superintendent’s update, said she was grateful for the support and, while overwhelming, an opportunity to learn and give back. She said Thurman has been reassured there is business as usual.
“We are doing the good work,” she said. “We are working together. We’re collaborating, and we haven’t missed a beat. We might be starting work at four a.m., but we haven’t missed a beat.”
