ELKHART, Ind. (WISH) — An investigation is underway after a 17-year-old male was shot dead by police just after 1 a.m. Sunday morning in Elkhart.

Police officers were called to 500 E Beardsley Ave, High Dive Park Pavilion, after one officer noticed a suspicious vehicle that was parked in a lot that was closed to the public, per Indiana’s Curfew for minor children.

The officer approached the vehicle and found an adult driver with several male and female passengers, some were juveniles. The officer called for backup and as the investigation quickly progressed, guns were fired by police, injuring one male in the vehicle.

He later died at the hospital. The name of the 17-year-old juvenile male is being withheld at this time.

One officer sustained a minor injury but didn’t require any immediate medical treatment.

Multiple handguns from within and around the suspicious vehicle, as well as both of the officers’ handguns, were seized for further investigation.

Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, per policy, while the homicide unit conducts its investigation.
